What would a tech review be without some iPhone reviews?
Yes, I had an iPhone for about 72 hours before I had to turn in to my boss and colleagues
The iPhone is virtually the same size as the Blackberry 8800 shown below
As a portable media device the iPhone is pretty good. There were of course some gotchas
I was unable to download my e-mail, calendar, and notes from my corporate serves. I was able to load my contacts.
All items had to be synced via the iTunes software that drastically slowed down normal PC operations
The music is only synced using play lists. You can not select by genres or artist without first putting them in a playlist. The music when played through the headset speakers and speaker phone sounded good. they sounded better through the specialty ear buds that are only available for the iPhone.
When pictures were synced, the folder structure was reduced all items in sub folders were brought up to the top levels for example the vacations folder contain everything, but the folders separating the locales was gone.
The pictures were very sharp and crisp, although they did a long time to be optimized for display on the iPhone
Typing was done on a virtual keyboard that had very small keys. Hovering a finger over the glass would accidentally produce a key click. You can not use a stylus or pointing device to minimize these errors and gloves wont work.
Removal of photos or anything from the phone must be done through the iTunes software. You can not delete anything from the phone itself.
Web browsing is pretty fast and the ability to shrink or expand a page easily to view is very cool. the lack of support of Java, Active X or other plug-in will limited internet usage.
Ken’s newest toy is the RIM 8800 from AT&T/Cingular The new model has an iPod feel to it with the wheel moved from the side that Blackberry has used for years to the center with a small pearl. The blackberry device has one of the best e-mail calendar, notes and contacts software tools I have used. The unit also has built in blue tooth voice service and speaker phone for hands free communication along with voice dialing. There is also a GPS antenna for use with a third party service .
